Pigs On The Wall - Pink Floyd Tribute

At The Redneck Country Club

By Joe Driscoll

From their early psychedelic days in the sixties, up through their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1996, Pink Floyd has been one of the most influential bands in rock history. They redefined what a rock album is supposed to be, and their live shows were even more phenomenal. Unfortunately today, the two remaining forces of the band, David Gilmour and Roger Waters, don't seem to be reuniting any time soon. However, you may be surprised to learn that the next best thing is right here in Houston.

Pigs on the Wall have been bringing the sights and sounds of Pink Floyd to audiences around the Houston area for the past few years. They played a fantastic show on Friday night for a packed house at Stafford's Redneck Country Club on March 9th. From Floyd fans who own every album on vinyl, to those who still have to ask "Which one's Pink," they have something for everyone.

Pigs started the show with a rarity from the Syd Barrett days, playing Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun off the 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets. They then wasted no time going into Shine On You Crazy Diamond, with band members trading off solos.

After playing Dogs, Pigs got to the heart of the show, playing the entirety of Pink Floyd's epic 1973 concept album, Dark Side of the Moon. While that should have been enough for any Pink Floyd show, it wasn't enough for this band. Once that was done, they played another hour's worth of hits and B-Sides from The Wall album including Another Brick in the Wall, Hey You, and Comfortably Numb, just to name a few.

Pigs on the Wall are comprised of some of the most top notch musicians in Houston. Keyboardist, Randy Wall and guitarist Paul Ramirez do most of the lead vocal work, perfecting the voice work of Roger Waters and David Gilmour. Holding down the rhythm section, Corey Tice did original drummer Nick Mason justice, while Brian Rooney played classic Floyd bass lines like Time, and Money.

Guitarists Guilherme Fonseca and Paul Ramirez took turns taking lead and backing one another up. The two of them recreated the complex guitar work originally laid down by Gilmour with ease. Andrew Saad played a mean sax, along with Evelyn Rubio. Evelyn, in addition to also playing the saxophone, doubled as the backing female vocalist. She stole the spotlight when she nailed the vocals on Great Gig in the Sky.

Pigs on the Wall impressed with their ability to recreate the sounds of Pink Floyd, which is no easy task. However, at the same time, they didn't feel the need to play the songs note for note, rehashing the original studio recordings. While taking extended solos, they gave the audience something they couldn't get from their CD or vinyl at home, while still staying true to the music and sound of Pink Floyd.

As great as the band sounded, no Pink Floyd show is complete without a visual element. That's where hoola hooper Gilly Brown came in. Mesmerizing the crowd with her glow in the dark hoop, carefully synchronized her graceful hoola moves with the music throughout the show.

Pigs ended the show in a way that probably doesn't happen at most of their shows. Tradition at Redneck Country Club goes that artists end the show with the traditional hymn "Amazing Grace." While some artists might quickly sing a few verses, and get off the stage, they took it to a whole new level. Opting instead to sing it to the tune of The Animals' House of the Rising Sun, each member of the band had a chance show off their blues chops to end the show.

Pigs on the Wall are one of the most talented group of artists Houston has to offer. Don't miss their next show on [date] at [location].
